Courage

peace 3

Here’s a story of courage I am compelled to share from Dan Millman’s ‘Sacred Journey of the Peaceful Warrior’.

A little girl named Liza had a rare and life threatening disease. Her hope of survival was pinned on a blood transfusion from her five-year old brother, who had miraculously survived the same disease and had subsequently built antibodies towards it.

The doctor explained to the little boy that his older sister needed his help and that a blood transfusion from him to her would most likely save her life. The little boy hesitated just briefly before agreeing that he would do it if it would save Liza.

During the transfusion the little brother sat very quietly, smiling in the bed next to his sister. As the colour returned to his sister’s face his smile faded. Trembling, he asked the doctor: “Will I start to die right away?”

You see, the brother thought that to save his sister he had to give her all of his blood.

What a beautiful example of courage.

The boy acted in the face of fear by surrendering to the unknown. He did not understand what he was going to put himself through. He didn’t call for testimonials of others who had ventured through similar experiences before him.

He bypassed his fears as he accessed compassion for his sister.

I realize how much time I waste worrying and stressing, as I try and second guess all my perceived and possible outcomes. I catch myself procrastinating in indecision, which is just fear in disguise.

This story inspires me to live courageously in the moment. I now know that my life is only as rich as it is because of the fears I have faced so far.

I wish you a week of living courageously.

All my love

Nicolette
